    Lunch and Learn

Sisterhood Lunch and Learn will begin its 20th season of study on September 11 and continue on Mondays through May 21. These classes, with  more than 90 men and women participants, are an opportunity to join with a group of serious adult learners for lively discussion and warm camaraderie. Thes classes begin at noon and go until 2:30 p.m. with a lunch catered by the Butcherie II in Canton.

The schedule for this year is as follows:

12:15-1 p.m. "Torah" Rabbi Starr will continue his study of the Biblical Book of Sh'mot (Exodus), Chapter 12. We will trace the story of the Exodus from Egypt and follow the Hebrew people on their journey to the Promised Land. The text is studied in English with frequent references to the Hebrew text and Jewish legendary tradition. No previous participation is necessary.

    1-1:30 p.m. Lunch

1:30-2:30 p.m. "The Story of Conservative Judaism". In this class Rabbi Starr will trace the origins of the Conservative Movement and the processes of thought that led to the development of a religious movement. Going back as far as the 16th century, Rabbi Starr will explore the unique ideas that animated modern Jewish thought and led to the founding in America of a Conservative Movement. Unlikely names such as Nachman Krochmal, Leopold Zunz, and Zachariah Frankel will be introduced along with more well known scholars such as Solomon Schechter and Moses Mendelssohn. This class should provide a window into the development of modern Jewish thought and the historical method of thinking that we take for granted in our studies. No previous participation is necessary to join this class.
