    Cultural Arts Committee

The Cultural Arts Committee is geared towards serving the cultural needs of the Temple Israel community. Specifically, the committee stages events at the Temple that involve music, art, drama, dance, and literature, and frequently showcase the talents of Temple members.

Two particular events the Committee helps to organize are the annual Purim Schpiel musical, as well as an annual Spring-time concert sponsored by the Sandra Gamm Memorial Fund for Music and the Creative Arts.

Peri Smilow is a nationally recognized contemporary Jewish singer/songwriter, performer, educator and community activist. As a touring artist, her music and message of tikkun olam have been heard throughout the U.S., Canada, England, Singapore and Israel. Peri has released three recordings of original contemporary Jewish music including Songs of Peace and Ashrey. Her most recent recording, Peri Smilow and The Freedom Music Project: The music of Passover and the Civil Rights Movement, features an electrifying 18-voice choir of young Black and Jewish singers celebrating the freedom music of their traditions. The Freedom Music Project is the subject of several feature stories broadcast nationally on NBC and ABC TV, National Public Radio's Weekend All Things Considered and internationally on Voice of America radio. In addition to her life in music, Peri holds an Ed.M from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and has spent 25 years working with teenagers as an educator and "non-profit entrepreneur" in underserved urban communities.
