Bar/Bat Mitzvah Guide:
FOUR - The Bar/Bat Mitzvah Service

If any members of your family wish to participate in our service, please inform the Cantor well in advance of the simha. He will strive to accommodate your request. It is customary in our Temple for parents to bless their children on the bima in Hebrew and/or in English (find Parents' Blessings here). On Shabbat morning, the family of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah will be honored by the congregation with five aliyot (persons called up to recite the Torah blessings). For times other than Shabbat morning, there are fewer aliyot. Please contact the executive director for details. We urge you to send a copy of the Torah blessings (PDF available here) well in advance to the people you have selected for these honors. In addition, there are non-speaking honors that will be made available to your family. These consist of: Opening and closing the Ark (4); Torah carriers (2); Hagbah (lifting the Torah); and Gelilah (dressing the Torah). Torah blessings and other prayers are recorded and accessible to you and your guests here.
