Ritual Round Robin
Sunday, September 18, 2016, this was an opportunity to learn (or-re-learn) how to:
- have an aliyah;
- lift & dress the Torah (hagbah & gelilah);
- say Kiddush & Shabbat rituals at home;
- say the prayer after meals (Birkat Hamazon);
- mark the end Shabbat with Havdalah;
- lay (put on) tefillin.
Havdalah at the Lake
Part of the weekend/Shabbat celebrating the installation of Rabbi Rachel Silverman, we held havdalah at Lake Massapoag. It was great to see so many members of our community, all generations and ages, turn out to sing songs, enjoy s'mores, and bring in a new week together.
Shalom Ireland: Movie
Sunday, February 28, 2016, with the support of the Briscoe Family, and sponsored by the Temple Israel Adult & Family Education Committee, the Consulate General of Israel to New England, and the Irish Cultural Centre of New England, we showed the documentary film Shalom Ireland. The film features Robert Briscoe, the first Jewish Lord Mayor of Dublin, who ran guns for the Irish Republican Army during Ireland's War of Independence and smuggled Jews escaping from the Holocaust into Palestine. Robert's son, Ben, followed in his footsteps and served in the Irish Parliament and as Lord Mayor. He was running for the European Parliament at the time of the filming. Other Irish dignitaries including the Herzog family are also featured in the film. Shalom Ireland was featured at the Jerusalem Jewish Film Festival and has screened at more than a hundred festivals, community centers, universities, and synagogues around the world. From the outset, Joe was instrumental in conceiving and supporting completion of the film, and became a very dear friend of Valerie Lapin, the film's Producer/Director.
