News & Announcements for 2023-2024

2024 Brotherhood Man of the Year

Stephen Shrago has been chosen as our 2024 Temple Israel Brotherhood Man of the Year! Stephen is a Past President of our Brotherhood. He has also served as Treasurer of the New England Region FJMC. Stephen presently continues to help us in so many ways throughout the year. He shops for the groceries and cooks the dinner! Stephen is regularly making sure we have what we need in the kitchen to ensure every Brotherhood Chef--including him--has what it takes to make each Brotherhood breakfast or dinner event a rousing success! Presently Stephen is (once again) co-chairing our auction (don't forget to place your bid today at tibrotherhoodauction.com). In the past, Stephen has co-chaired the Combined Charities Golf Tournament and coordinated the Temple's Mishloach Manot youth fundraiser. He has participated in several different Temple committees over the years and he has served on the TI Board of Directors. He was honored as TI Brotherhood's Keeper of the Flame in 2018.

The Man of the Year Dinner Event will be held at the Temple on Sunday evening, June 2nd, 2024.

Yasher Koach, Stephen! We all look for to toasting (and roasting) you!

2023 Keeper of the Flame

The New England Region Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs (FJMC) Keeper of the Flame Award Ceremony was held at Temple Israel this past November. Late this past summer, a committee of past TI Brotherhood Keeper of the Flame honorees chose Harold Waisel as Brotherhood of Temple Israel’s 2023-2024 Recipient. Harold was recognized for his many years of service, support, and giving to our Brotherhood, to Temple Israel, to the New England Region FJMC, and to the greater Jewish community. Harold is a past President of our Brotherhood. He has co-chaired our annual auction as has continually stepped up as a leader and volunteer in so many of our programs. Harold was a founder of our annual charity golf tournament, and he has been instrumental in helping our club achieve many of our annual Torch Awards. Harold has worked diligently to document our program playbooks, event menus, and in coordinating our kitchen crews. We were very pleased to host this year's event – celebrating Harold along with all the honorees from the Region’s other men’s clubs – right here at Temple Israel of Sharon.

Hearing Men’s Voices 2023-2024
In-Person Discussion Series

Hearing Men's Voices provides a safe, supportive environment in which men can delve into areas of mutual interest and concern. This year’s theme is “Manliness”.

We all grew up with notions of what it means to be a man in various aspects of our lives. Now that we are grown up, what does it turn out to mean? Join us at Hearing Men's Voices. Bring your own stories and your perspectives.

  • Nov. 16, 2023 (Thursday) Manhood through the Ages - When you were a child, what did "being a man" mean to you, or your father?  What do you think it means now?
  • Dec. 12, 2023 (Tuesday) Man Up! We grew up with expectations about manhood. Are you meeting them? What do you do when life does not go according to plan?
  • Jan. 17, 2024 (Wednesday) On Being a Man - Is "being a man" something that relates to success or is it about fulfillment?
  • Feb. 15, 2024 (Thursday) Man to Man - How are you different from your father?  How would your children answer the same question?
  • Mar. 12, 2024 (Tuesday) Superman - Do you feel that the lines between "men's roles" and "women's roles" have gotten, or should be more flexible?  How have you adjusted?
  • Apr. 9, 2024 (Tuesday) Observant Man - Judaism has rules and notions about manhood and men's roles that are distinct from those of our larger society. How do you incorporate Judaism's view of men into your view of who you are?
  • May 16, 2024 (Thursday) TBD (rain date)
