Ritual Services & Programming

Erev Sukkot – Friday, September 29
Evening Services, 6:15pm (Sanctuary & on Zoom)

Home/Sukkah Ritual
Light Shabbat/Festival candles at home with two blessings (l'hadlik ner shel shabbat v’shel yom tov and shehechiyanu) at 6:12pm.

It is customary to light a long-burning or yahrtzeit candle as well (without a blessing) so fire will be available to transfer for lighting candles on Saturday (7:10pm) evening or for cooking on Saturday night - Sunday night.

Kiddush for Shabbat and festivals should be made in the Sukkah followed by the additional blessings asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu leisheiv basukkah then shehechiyanu. If you usually stand for kiddush, in a Sukkah you should stand for the blessings, then sit to drink.

We invite ushpizin (spiritual guests to sit alongside the people we have invited in ( See here for more info ). We say Hamotzi as usual, over two challot, and additional prayers are included in Birkat HaMazon, grace after the meal. If it is raining, we eat indoors.

All seven days of Sukkot, we make an effort to eat, drink, learn, and spend free time in the sukkah.  Conceptually during this period, our homes become our temporary dwellings and our sukkot our permanent dwellings. If you don’t have your own sukkah, please feel free to stop by our brand new Taubenfeld-Cohen Sukkah for meals or blessings.

Shabbat and Sukkot, First Day - Saturday, September 30
Morning Services, 9am, Sanctuary & on Zoom

Other approximate times are as follows:
9:45am, Hallel without lulav and etrog
10:05am, Torah service
11:40am, Hoshanot (circular procession) without lulav and etrog
12:15pm, Kiddush in the sukkah

*Please note that we don not take up Lulav and Etrog on shabbat-kind of like how we don't blow shofar on Shabbat.*

Mincha, 1:00pm Sanctuary & on Zoom - Please note new time

Maariv Services, 7:10pm, in the Taubenfeld-Cohen Sukkah

Home/Sukkah Ritual
Light festival candles at/after 7:10pm (transferring fire from an existing flame), with the blessing l'hadlik ner shel yom tov

Recite festival kiddush in the sukkah for the second night of Sukkot, followed by borei meorei ha’aish, followed by hamavdil bein kodesh l’kodesh, followed by shehechiyanu first and leisheiv basukkah (invert the order from the previous night)
