TIRS 2021/22 Registration Form

TIRS

A note from Rabbi Silverman:

Dear Families,

Earlier this week, I celebrated my birthday by eating outside at a restaurant for the first time in 13-months. The (fully vaccinated) people that I was with commented at how strange it felt and, simultaneously, how strange it was that it wasn't THAT strange. This mix of emotions is how I write to you today. It feels a little bit head-spinning to be sending you registration for an in-person religious school 2021-2022 season, AND it also feels perfectly normal. I suspect this combination is something we're going to feel a lot in the coming months.

We're excited to be opening registration for the 2021-2022 school year. We feel confident, based on research, medical guidance, and historical data, that we can teach our students safely in-person.

Our Plans

We expect to return to a full in-person schedule. We are hopeful that we can bring back family programming, Eat Pray Learn, holiday celebrations, community programming, etc. We're also excited to be building out our staff, with many returning teachers and a few new faces.

We have hired Emmanuel Cantor, a Hebrew College Rabbinical School student to be our rabbinic intern. One of Emmanuel's focus areas is going to be building a High School program. He will start working with us over the summer. Additionally, the search process is underway for a Director of Youth Education and Programming. This person will be the religious school principal, as well as enhance our programming efforts (Shorasheem, USY, family events, holiday programs, etc.).

As we demonstrated in March of 2020 - and then throughout this entire year - we're pretty good at pivoting. I feel fairly confident that the plan we have in place will come to fruition. That said, if something changes with the COVID situation, we are ready to be nimble and quickly change directions.

COVID updates

Speaking of COVID, I anticipate masks and social distancing to still be in effect in the fall - and we would expect to comply. But/and, please know that we consult with our Medical Advisory Committee - and we are always happy to update our policies as the situation changes. We are unsure, as of now, if it will be safe to have the bus run this year. As we know more, we will keep you updated. Please indicate, on the registration form, if you'd like transportation from the Sharon public schools to religious school.

Lastly, I want you to know how much I am looking forward to seeing you and your kids back in this building. It has been a long year and I miss you terribly. I've enjoyed spending time with the middle schoolers on Zoom and seeing some of the younger kids on Sunday mornings - but it just hasn't been the same. I can't wait to gather again and reconnect.

Rabbi Silverman

The schedule for 2021/22 is as follows:

Shabbat morning:

10am - 12pm (programming for younger children will also be provided with timing available soon)

Sunday morning:

9am - 11am

Monday afternoon:

3:30 - 5:30

Wednesday afternoon:

Ulpan Kef - 3:30 - 5:30,

5th grade - 3:30 - 5:30 and

6th/7th - 2:30 - 5:30

Thursday afternoon:

3:30 - 5:30

Ulpan Kef is a Hebrew immersion play and learn group. The goals are to deepen and enhance the Hebrew knowledge and Judaic understanding of our younger elementary students (K-2) through an array of creative activities. A typical afternoon might include play time, stories, art, song, cooking, and more.

Bonus Day programming in previous years has included increased Hebrew language learning with a focus on modern/conversational Hebrew as well as hands-on activities in the Torah Lab.

The above programs will only run if we reach a critical mass of students.

Fees Structure for 2021/22

As a community our Temple is looking for increased participation in the commitment system while bearing in mind that Tuition is a real cost and is therefore instituting a floor, a baseline commitment, that entitles members to full benefits and regular tuition. The floor, this year, is set at $720/family unit.

At the same time we are emphasizing that nobody will be turned away for lack of capacity. This is not different than previous years, but bears re-emphasizing. Our Temple has a designated scholarship fund and it is preferable to make the $720 commitment and apply for tuition scholarships. To inquire about scholarship please contact jblumenthal@tisharon.org. As with commitments none of the educational or rabbinic staff has any information about a family’s receipt of scholarship funds.

This year’s fee structure is as follows:

There is a $250 per child (non-refundable) deposit. This must be paid, or the registration will not be considered completed. For transportation there is a $100 per child (non-refundable) deposit.

Minimum Commitment ($720)

Not Meeting Minimum (<$720)

Kindergarten

$720

$1000

1st & 2nd Grade

$1400

3rd - 7th Grade

$2000

Bnei Mitzvah Year Tuition and Program Fee

For children with a celebration in the 2021 calendar year (1/1/21 – 12/31/21) we bundle together all charges into a $3200 fee (payments begin 6/1/20).

The fee includes:

  • 20 Hours of Tutoring
  • Religious School ($1500)
  • Bnei Mitzvah Seminar
  • Basic Kiddush including Simcha Fee

In any other year, we would have requested an additional $100-200 per student to help cover the costs. And we recognize that, for many of our families, this is not the moment in time to do that. So if you are able to give more, please do consider a tax-deductible donation, in addition to your tuition. On a similar but opposite note, we know that many of you are struggling right now. We encourage you to reach out and let us know of any needs your family may have. We are committed to keeping our families in our community and growing their Jewish selves in whatever ways we can.
