Sefer Yehoshua—The Book of Joshua
Taught by Maureen Mintz
 - In person only

By tradition when we finish the final book of the Torah (Devarim/Deuteronomy) on Simhat Torah, we roll the scroll back to the beginning and begin anew with Bereishit/Genesis. But what if, instead, we turned the page and began Sefer Yehoshua/the Book of Joshua? What could we learn about the transition of leadership from Moshe to Yehoshua and the conquest of the land by B’nai Yisrael?

For six weeks we will explore some of the following questions raised by the text:

  • What qualities does a leader need to unite the people toward a common goal and do those necessary qualities change as the task changes?
  • What do we learn about war and peace in the time of the conquest and settlement?
  • How might the covenantal relationship between B’nai Yisrael and God change now that they are entering the promised land?
  • What are the human relationships that underlie our entrance into Eretz Yisrael and what effect do they have on the unfolding story

As always, everyone is welcome to the class. All texts will be provided in English and Hebrew and the conversations will be inclusive of all levels of knowledge and will not assume prior knowledge. In addition to text study, the class will include art, poetry and perhaps other media to enhance our understanding of the traditional material.

Class will be held on Tuesday evenings from 7:45pm (after minyan) to 9:15pm
