About Us
Our Mission & Values
Temple Israel, founded in 1937, is a vibrant, open, and affirming Conservative synagogue, welcoming and serving the South Area. The largest in Southeastern Massachusetts, Temple Israel offers a wide and varied range of religious services, classes, and events — from pre-K to mature adults — all designed to engage, inspire, and excite the mind, body, and spirit. Most programs are open to the public, often at no charge.
For Your Mind...
Whatever your age, interests, or skills, there is a full schedule of classes and activities certain to keep your mind engaged. A wide range of well-attended adult education courses and social action projects encourage participation at every level. From choral groups to one-on-one study sessions, we offer something for everyone.
Preschoolers may be enrolled in the award-winning Erna & Julius Hertz Nursery School, which offers a multi- faceted program providing experiences that encourage the child's emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual development.
Temple Israel's Religious School is open to children in grades K-12. The comprehensive curriculum includes holidays, Bible, Hebrew language, prayer skills, Israel, mitzvot, history, music, and art. Family workshops and parent learning are integrated with student learning.
To enable the older students to continue their learning and involvement in Jewish life, we maintain a very active United Synagogue Youth (USY) program. In every situation, we strive to educate for knowledge, participation, and responsibility within the Jewish community.
For Your Heart...
As a Temple member, you will find yourself enjoying various holiday-related events, meaningful family programs, and committee-sponsored activities all year long. Temple Israel is a vital social center in the local community.
Our growing Neipris Library serves the information seeker as well as the casual Jewish reader. The Sisterhood Walter Family Judaica Shop is well stocked with religious and artistic giftware. We have tasteful banquet halls and a kosher kitchen to accommodate your catering needs when celebrating family simchas. Our main sanctuary seats hundreds, while our chapel provides a more intimate prayer setting.
The Brotherhood, Sisterhood, Hazak, and various committees of the Temple offer numerous opportunities for members to perform acts of tzedakah within the Temple community, the Jewish community, and the greater community-at-large.
For Your Soul...
Temple Israel is well known as a diverse spiritual community. While the Learners' Minyan, children's services, and family services encourage participation, other members simply enjoy the vibrancy and warmth they feel during the High Holy Day services. Many congregants find meaning and support in the weekly Shabbat services, the morning and evening Minyan, and personal life-cycle events.
None of this would be possible were it not for our responsive, concerned clergy, who are deeply invested in the leadership of Temple Israel and are personally committed to challenging and encouraging you to explore, develop, and strengthen your Jewish identity.
Temple Israel welcomes new members.
