Shabbat Morning Service
Shabbat Morning at Temple Israel is something special. From our main service in the synagogue sanctuary to services for children, teens, and learners, the synagogue is abuzz with activity. On most Shabbatot, a greeter is on duty outside the sanctuary to assist with any questions or needs, offer guidance, or simply to say, "Shabbat Shalom."
Temple Israel is a traditional and egalitarian conservative synagogue. Our sanctuary service generally begins at 9:00 am; we also offer weekly services for children and youth. On Shabbat we unplug from our activities of the week, turning off the technology that binds us to the never-ending pace that society demands of us. Our service helps to be the capstone, as a spiritual culmination of the week. At services we reflect in prayer and community, frequently celebrating life-cycle events as a community. After services we gather together for "Kiddush" a time for socializing, refreshments, and to catch up with friends.
Shabbat Afternoon Service (Mincha/Maariv)
The Shabbat afternoon services are held approximately one hour before the conclusion of Shabbat (see calendar for exact times). These services mostly take place in our chapel, located on the lower level of Temple Israel. The service is intimate and friendly bringing the Shabbat experience to a close and welcoming the new week together. Sometimes celebrations will also take place either in our chapel service, or in our sanctuary. The services end with the lighting of the Havdalah candle, and the sweet spices that signal the conclusion of Shabbat.
"Shabbat is a day when our most important goal is not to have, but to be, not to own, but to give, not to control, but to share, not to subdue, but to be in accord..."
-Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel
