Movie for Tisha B'Av: Commandment 613

Wednesday, July 29, 2020 8 Av 5780

9:15 PM - 10:00 PMZOOM

A film by Miriam Lewin and Randi Cecchine

Rabbi Kevin Hale joyfully practices the sacred craft of Torah restoration, heeding the final commandment of the five books of Moses as he brings new life to scrolls saved in Czechoslovakia during the Shoah. As his scribal work takes him to communities entrusted with the scrolls, he reflects on his own path to faith and practice.

In 2019, Rabbi Kevin Hale, Sofer STaM, restored our Czech Torah scroll. He is the subject of a new short documentary, “Commandment 613,” which touches on the history of the scrolls and shows him working with two communities. On July 29th, after our online Eicha Tisha B'Av, we will host an online screening of the film, plus a Q&A with Rabbi Hale and the filmmakers. Rabbi Fish and Art Newman will also discuss Temple Sharon’s experience with our Czech scroll.

On the saddest day of the Jewish year, we recall destructions and exiles throughout our history. This year we will reflect on the story of our restored Shoah Torah scroll. We will consider the journey from destruction to re-building at this sacred scroll symbolizes.
