Once again here is the the recipe that we are basing our dough on:

If you plan to bake-along you will need:

  • 1 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/8 cup canola oil
  • 1/2 tsp orange zest
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 1/8 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1 - 3 tsp water (if needed)
  • Nonstick cooking oil spray

I have adapted a recipe from https://toriavey.com/toris-kitchen/dairy-free-hamantaschen/ to 1/2 recipe so it is easier for children to manage. If you want the full recipe please go to the website and use the selector to change the portions - this recipe makes 15-20 hamentaschen.

For fillings: Jam, canned pie filling, a little apple sauce mixed with nuts and dried fruit. Whatever is easiest for you.
Equipment: 1 baking sheet, 2 mixing bowls, sifter (a fine colander, you can get by without it), wooden spoon (or small hands), rolling pin, 3-inch cookie cutter or drinking glass with 3-inch diameter rim.

Tips:

  • When making messy stuff it is easier for kids to work at the kitchen table rather than the counter.
  • If you have a plastic table cloth - amazing! - cover the table and let them have at it.
  • if you do not have a plastic table cloth - use baking paper and masking tape to create an easy to clean up/throw out work area. (the paper is compostable or recyclable)
  • If your child is using an iPad or Kindle or Phone or tablet - put the device in a ziplock bag. The device still works and will be safe from mess.
  • Make sure that your child/ren is involved with some of the cleaning up. Anything that is age appropriate. It's an important lesson to be learned in life and especially in the kitchen.
